November 2011 - NYC Documentary Festival screening of The Thing That Happened, an award-winning film about Hope North.

The Thing that Happened is a 22-minute documentary short that profiles Hope North. Featuring a score by Adam Horivitz of The Beastie Boys, the film was included as one of the films for New York's Documentary Festival at IFC Center.

November 2011 - WhyHunger/Hard Rock Cafe partners again with Hope North for the "Imagine There's No Hunger" campaign.

Hope North was once again included as a partner for WHY Hunger and Hard Rock International's fourth annual "Imagine There's No Hunger" campaign. With the generous support of Yoko Ono Lennon, this campaign raised funds and awareness for WhyHunger and its inspirational grassroots partners overseas.

June 2011 - Forest Whitaker on CBS Early Show promoting Hope North

On June 23rd, the CBS Early Show interviewed Forest Whitaker after he was awarded as a goodwill ambassador for UNESCO. When speaking about his commitment to helping rehabilitate troubled youth around the world, he highlighted his longtime support of Hope North.

March 2011 - Susan Sarandon and Mary-Louise Parker host the Hope North Ping Pong Ball

On Sunday, March 27th Susan Sarandon and Mary Louise Parker hosted a special benefit for Hope North at SPiN New York. The evening included free ping-pong and music performances by Rufus Wainwright, Martha Wainwright, Josh Ritter, Jesse Malin, Charlie Mars, and Hope North founder Okello Sam himself.

The event raised a total of $61,000—more than twice our original fundraising goal and enough to support 40 Hope North students for an entire year.







February 2011 - Okello Sam participates in the Global Action Forum in Los Angeles

On February 17, Okello Sam, founder of Hope North, was invited to participate in the first annual Global Action Forum in Los Angeles. Okello spoke about his personal experiences that inspired him to launch his own grassroots organization as part of the Human Rights panel "End Slavery Now." Other noteworthy panelists included Kevin Bales, President and Co-Founder of Free the Slaves; Bill Livermore, Executive Director of Somaly Mam Foundation; and Anne Archer, co-founder of Artists for Human Rights.

That evening he was invited to join a host of popular musicians in performing an original song as part of the Global Action Awards ceremony hosted by Kara DioGuardi.





November 2009 - Why Hunger/ Hard Rock Café Partner with Hope North for "Imagine There's No Hunger" campaign

The campaign, called Imagine There's No Hunger, with Yoko Ono's support, used John Lennon's image and song to raise money for 8 grassroots organizations working to end hunger around the world.

Hope North donors Forest Whitaker and Keisha Whitaker joined Ringo Starr for the launch. USA Today was there, and Hope North received excellent coverage.  





February 2009 - Reuters promotes Hope North's work helping Uganda's "lost children"

Reuters featured a story about Uganda's "lost children" and Hope North's work providing these young survivors with tools for peace and reconciliation. This particular story focuses on a group of capoeira dancers from Brazil who traveled to work with Hope North students.

August 2008 - Hope North chosen as Clothes Off Our Back Beneficiary

Clothes Off Our Back was founded by actors and philanthropists Jane Kaczmarek and Bradley Whitford whose efforts, along with their celebrity and designer friends, have helped improve the lives of children across the globe. Over 600 celebrities have participated in Clothes Off Our Back auctions since its inception in 2002, helping raise nearly $3 million for various children's charities.

Proceeds from auctions held between August 2008 and May 2009 will benefit Hope North along with other charitable organizations.

July 2008 - Eti! East Africa Speaks!
Performance by Hope North Founder Okello Sam, Tuesday July 22, 2008

Forged in Fire is a collaborative performance piece by Okello Kelo Sam, Robert Ajwang and Laura Edmondson that integrates dance, music, and testimony to explore Okello's wrenching experiences of the civil war in northern Uganda. Performed by Okello and Ajwang.

In July 2008, a group of eleven theatre artists from East Africa (Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda) came to Dartmouth College and NYC for a three and a half week residency. The goal of the residency is to help East African artists develop concrete and useful relationships that can be translated into practical opportunities to build further connections between the U.S. and East Africa.

June 2008 - Hope North chosen as beneficiary of GQ's The Gentlemen's Fund



This year, The Gentlemen's Fund initiative has partnered with five outstanding charities and five celebrity ambassadors to support five cornerstones essential to men-Opportunity, Health, Education, Environment, and Mentorship. Established in 2007 to commemorate GQ's 50th anniversary, The Gentlemen's Fund hopes to encourage individuals to become agents of change by contributing to charities that champion these causes.

The Gentlemen's Fund, Citi, and Forest Whitaker have partnered with Hope North to take action. Citi is proud to partner with the Gentlemen's Fund, Forest Whitaker, and Hope North to provide the students of Northern Uganda mentorship and the help they need to help themselves.
